Ahmed’s journey into the world of technology began with his education at the University of Toronto, where he studied Computer and Electrical Engineering. After completing his studies, he embarked on a career at Microsoft, where he quickly established himself as a skilled software engineer. Leading teams of talented engineers, Ahmed played a crucial role in developing mission-critical solutions that impacted millions of users worldwide. During his tenure, he honed his expertise in search technologies, complex data systems, and artificial intelligence, which would later shape his entrepreneurial endeavors.
Recognized as a pioneer in the use of data in infrastructure markets, Ahmed has been invited to speak at prestigious industry events and has been featured in renowned publications such as CNN, Fortune, Business News Network (BNN), The Washington Post, and The Globe & Mail. His innovative approach and groundbreaking work have made him a sought-after expert in the field.
In his current role as CEO of Citylitics, Ahmed is responsible for overseeing various aspects of the company’s operations. He spearheads sales and revenue growth, develops effective go-to-market strategies, manages investor relations, drives strategic planning initiatives, and focuses on talent acquisition to build a world-class team. Sunit Mohindroo – Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer:
Sunit Mohindroo is a visionary entrepreneur and product leader, currently holding the position of Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Citylitics. With a strong background in systems design engineering and a commitment to data-driven decision-making, Sunit has played a key role in driving Citylitics’ success and revolutionizing the way cities utilize data for positive outcomes.
Sunit’s educational journey began at the University of Waterloo, where he pursued a degree in Systems Design Engineering, earning a place on the Dean’s Honour List. During his studies, he explored various disciplines, including management sciences and biomechanics. Notably, his engineering capstone project focused on creating a groundbreaking Universal Remote system for quadriplegics. The innovative solution allowed individuals to control electronic devices in their homes using a clicker-type device controlled solely by the movement of their mouth. This project showcased Sunit’s passion for leveraging technology to improve the lives of others.
Throughout his career, Sunit has amassed a diverse range of experiences in the technology industry. He completed co-op terms with Telus in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he held roles as a Digital Transformation Project Manager, Software Engineer, and NSERC Research recipient at Slipstream, a Waterloo-based file compression startup later acquired by Research in Motion. These experiences sharpened his skills and prepared him for future endeavors.
Sunit’s professional journey took a significant leap forward when he joined Apple as an engineer for the Exploration and Prototyping Team. Working alongside industry giants, he was involved in the creation of the first iPad prototype for Steve Jobs and contributed to the development of the initial prototype remote for Apple TV. He then transitioned to the role of Engineering Program Manager for the iPod Division, where he played a crucial role in launching the 3rd-Gen iPod Nano with double the original capacity, showcasing his expertise in product development and strategic thinking. Sunit’s passion for innovation and cutting-edge technologies led him to Microsoft, where he served as a Program Manager on the Entertainment & Devices Team. In this role, he specialized in pioneering battery technologies for music, Surface, and gaming devices such as Xbox. He also spent several months in China, leading the device manufacturing process once they were fully designed, further expanding his global perspective.
During a social event, Sunit had a fortuitous encounter with Ahmed Badruddin, the Co-Founder of Citylitics. Recognizing their shared entrepreneurial ambitions and interests in data, sports, and disruptive ideas, they joined forces. Sunit played a pivotal role in running the Lean Startup Conference Simulcast in Toronto at MaRS Discovery District, further showcasing his dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and growth.
As the Chief Product Officer of Citylitics, Sunit plays a critical role in shaping the company’s vision and driving its product strategy. He oversees the product vision, development, data strategy, data operations, and the people and culture teams. With an emphasis on systems thinking, data-driven decision-making, and user-centric design, Sunit ensures that Citylitics continues to deliver cutting-edge solutions that drive growth and impact.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Sunit enjoys worldwide travel, immersing himself in different cultures and understanding how they address societal needs. His personal interests include coaching youth sports, exploring sports analytics, creating infographics and data visualizations that tell compelling stories, and advocating for initiatives related to zero waste, the sharing economy, and material recycling programs. Notably, Sunit also worked for Slipstream, a Waterloo-based file compression startup that was successfully acquired by Research in Motion.
Off the record, Sunit has had the privilege of meeting industry luminaries such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates during his tenure at Apple and Microsoft, respectively. He also had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Tony Fadell, widely known as the Father of the iPod and the inventor of Nest Thermostat, which was acquired by Google. Furthermore, Sunit has co-authored a Water Industry Anthology titled “Damned If We Don’t: Ideas for Accelerating Change Around Water,” showcasing his passion for addressing critical environmental challenges.
